It is the last day of school. It is always such a bittersweet time of year. We have been blessed with some wonderful teachers and amazing human beings in our lives this school year and we want to make sure these people know how much they have meant to us.
I have 7 children in 5 different schools, all with multiple teachers. We started a project for our teachers about a month ago and today is the day to share our thank you’s. We painted plates.
Plate Project
This is a project I’ve done before with my older kids and I love projects that have several steps. We talk about what we are grateful for. We share stories and what our teachers are like. We decide what colors or designs might be their favorites. And I can divvy up the kids into different steps so I’m not trying to help 7 kids all at once!
Supplies
I ordered all of the supplies on Amazon and we are pleased with the results. We needed glass plates, clear is best as we painted on the back side so the design shows through. We used ceramic paints that get baked onto the glass when we are done. Smallish brushes for details were purchased and that’s all we needed! We did have plenty of paper towels and we spread out butcher paper to work on at the table. The paint can be cleaned up with water before it dries, but the butcher paper made clean up easier.

The Process
Pictures explain it best… I painted the designs for the younger kids in
A day or less to dry all the paint and then bake it in the oven. The directions are on the paint bottles, but basically, put the glassware in the oven while it’s cold, heat to 350 degrees, bake for 30 minutes, let it cool in the oven.
The Gifting
Wrapping presents is one of my kids’ favorite things to do. We included a box of brownie mix and a note that said, “Thank you for helping me grow this year.”

Served up with love!
***An Added Note***
These look like small bottles of paint, but it goes a long way! We have so much left that the kids want to make plates for us here at home. It’ll be one of our summer activities, along with using the paint to make our own summer glasses for lemonade and ice tea.
We have canning jars, so the kids and I are going to freestyle some art on the outside of the jars and turn them into drinking glassware. I won’t do the outlines for them… they can just paint as they wish. This way, everyone will have their own glass, which they can keep track of and I won’t be washing a million different cups all summer. I’m sure we will still have paint left, so I may remember to do the same project with mugs in the fall for our winter tea and cider.
Pauline
What a great idea. I love how creative you are with the kids. Art can be so therapeutic.
Karla
Thanks! There is so much good that happens during projects! Together time, trying new things, using the creative brain, being individuals. It’s a gift to be able to do this with the kids.
Nyxie
This looks like so much fun I want to get my hands into it! So creative and freeing, definitly a ultimate destressor š

I am always looking for things to keep my kids busy. It’s the cure for screen time! And getting to make something that says thank you is best of all!

How awesome! Family fun, cool gifts, and valuable life lessons all rolled into one!

Tricia Snow
What a fun summer project! Sending to my daughter right now.
Karla
Thanks! I hope she has as much fun with it as we did!
Laura Lee
You are an amazing woman! I fostered for a few years and gave it up for a number of reasons. I had 8 children at one time and can’t imagine getting them all involved in an arts and crafts project. When I only had 2-5 it was more manageable for me. You’re a superhero!
Karla
I hear ya! I sometimes wonder where my brain goes. But these kids love art and projects and scissors and paint. They are happy and it’s amazing to see the cooperation. Plus, I really do break it down into small pieces. Two kids get home an hour before the others, so they did theirs without others around. The older kids are true warriors at helping me with the Littles. And the teens LOVE art! It works somehow. Thanks for the good feedback and support!!!!! š
Alexandra
Great post! thank you for sharing! noting some ideas for my kiddo
Karla
That’s good to hear! Keep the kids busy and thankful! Thanks for checking this out.
Magan
What sweet gifts! As a former classroom teacher, I would have loved to receive something like this. I love it!
Karla
Awwww… find someone to make you one! Or set yourself up with a project. After teaching, perhaps your own artistic project without directing kids might be fun!
Adrienne Redelings
What a cute idea. The plates are beautiful!
Karla
Thank you, Adrienne! the kids were so proud!
Shirley
As a recently retired high school math teacher, I would have loved to receive one of these plates! Great idea!
Karla
Sweet! My 15 year old made plates for two of her favorite teachers. She said she got big hugs. High school teachers have been true treasures in my life as a parent. The ones that connect with my kids are my heroes!!!!!

Dena
Ohhh… what a sweet and thoughtful gift! I’m sure there were some tears in the teacher’s eyes when they received these gifts! š
Karla
Thanks, Dena. I wasn’t there as the gifts were opened, and most of my kids wouldn’t notice tears, but knowing the teachers (and their year-long delight and support of my kids), I’m sure they got a bit emotional. š
I’m so grateful for wonderful teachers!!!
angela
I need to make another one of these, I have one now from just my twins. Everyone should make one of these and as a gift for grandparents.
Karla
Oh, yes! We actually have made these years ago (when my grown girls were young) and actually put the paint on their hands for handprints. There are so many wonderful ways to use these paints. Have fun!!!!
Kymberly Irwin
What an awesome idea and so special for a teacher to receive. Anyone can go out and buy a box of candy … I think these personal gifts are the ones teacher’s cherish the most!
Karla
I SO hope these are treasured gifts (more than chocolate). But regardless, the kids have memories and pictures and hearts full of love. The school years are SO formative!!!
Kyndall Bennett
This is so precious! I love how every plate will be unique for each teacher! ā¤
Karla
Yes! The plates will have their own journeys that we will not know. But the kids wlll remember gratitude and art and time to say thank you. I hope the teachers will remmember how special my kids are!
jen
you are teaching valuable life lessons. the greatest thing we can ever teach a child are the words thank you and the meaning behind them. these are lessons that will take them far and they don’t even realize it. love.
Cynthia Mackintosh
I absolutely love this idea. I’m a part-time/substitute teacher now (used to be full-time) and if I got one of those as a gift, it would certainly be treasured. So creative & thoughtful!
Karla
Thank you, Cynthia. This was a special project to work on. We had some very special teachers this year!!!! Thanks for the feedback.

Holly Bird
I love this idea! Gratitude is not something we are born with..it is taught and it looks like everyone was learning from this project including the teachers!! You are very inspiring! Thank you for sharing!
Karla
Thanks, Holly! We try to live with gratitude. Even stuck in traffic, I ask the kids to say a prayer for whoever had the accident. We can ALWAYS find gratitude! Thank you for the support and encouragement!
Kate
What a great idea! I’m going to do special plates for a small family anniversary together. People can take the plates home (after cleaning) afterwards as a reminder of the party.
Karla
Way cool!!!!! What a great idea! I’d love to see the plates when you are done. I’m always looking for new ideas and I love beautiful projects!
Joanne
What a great project to do! Love that they are all learning to give back at the same time!

AND having so much fun! These kids love projects and they love giving presents. Teachers described how excited the kids were to see the gifts opened. Win-win!
Karen
I love this idea! Looks like a fun project. Love that you have found something that works for kids of all ages. Iām sure the teachers are happy to get something meaningful like this- I used to teach first grade and I would have loved it.
Karla
Thank you, Karen. The teachers LOVED them! And the kids were so proud to show them what they had done. It was fun.
Lori
What a pretty and practical gift idea! Gratitude and being thankful is such an important value to learn and you’re building it into everyone’s life; yours, the chilldren and the teachers who are receiving the gifts. (And us too – those who read your post š ) It’s a positive memory these children will have about feeling thankful… the activity is a gift that keeps on giving, especially for those who created the item! LOVE this on all levels.
Karla
Thank you, Lori. It does have so many levels, doesn’t it? We make so many of our gifts and it’s always great family time as well as a time to build memories. Thanks!
